Breast Cancer Support
Margie has been working in a Breast Clinic for the past five years with women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has also worked extensively with the families of these women. Margie is also part of a multi-disciplinary team who specialise in breast cancer services within the Eastern Suburbs
Margie is aware that there needs to be a balance between both the physical and the emotional realms of a woman’s breast cancer experience. This is known as the mind-body connection. There is clear evidence that psychological interventions are effective in reducing distress and promoting adjustment of people with cancer (Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Psychosocial care of Adults with Cancer, p. 101).
Margie has been providing ongoing support to women within the Breast Clinic and has supported women and family members through all phases of their diagnosis. Her clinical work has included both early stage and advanced stage breast cancer.
Some of the common reasons that people seek counseling when dealing with cancer include:
- Adjusting to changed circumstances
- Coping Skills Enhancement
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Relationship Difficulty
- Existential Concerns
- Support with making treatment decisions
- Body Image
- Anticipatory grief and loss
- Bereavement
